A comprehensive tour exploring the historical sites of Sicily whilst savouring
local wines and culinary delights. This tour gives you an insight into
the Sicilian culture and way of life.
Day 1 Saturday - PalermoWelcome to the warm and beautiful island of Sicily! Upon arrival at Palermo airport proceed through the Passport Control and collect your luggage inside the customs area. Then independent transfer to your hotel. Tonight we meet our staff at hotel for a short briefing and then gather for dinner at a local restaurant. (D)
Day 2 Sunday - Monreale, Palermo, CefalωBreakfast at hotel. Our first stop is Monreale to see where the Arab-Norman art and architecture reached the pinnacle of its glory with the Duomo, launched in 1174 by William II. It represents scenes from the Old and New Testaments all in golden mosaics. Then onto Palermo to explore the lively Capo Market, a large open air street market that captures the flavor ofPalermo's
Saracen Arab past. Capo is a jumble of vendors' stalls, winding
toward the old gate -Porta Carini- of what used to be the city wall. This afternoon we continue
by seeing Piazza Pretoria and Via Maqueda, whose “four corners” converge Palermo at a quartet
of baroque palaces left over from the heyday of Spanish rule dating from 1560. This afternoon
depart for Cefalù, a charming coastal town home to a massive Norman Cathedral with
outstanding mosaics. Here we visit the city centre and stroll down main street to reach the
Cathedral. Later back to Palermo (BB)
Day 3 Monday - Marsala Wine, Olive Oil, Erice
Depart for Western Sicily. Proceed to Marsala, visit a local wine cellar and sample local Sicilian wines. Then on to the Salt Way Road and we will tour the historic saltpan works, where the ancient tradition of harvesting salt from the sea is still practiced. Then, to an olive oil factory & farmhouse to enjoy a light lunch.
This afternoon we continue to hilltop town of Erice. Wander through the ancient streets and visit some of the famous homemade pastry shops known for their marzipan candies and other delicacies like almond and pistachio pastries. Later back to Palermo. (BB, L)
Day 4 Tuesday - Agrigento & Piazza Armerina
IMPORTANT: the Roman Villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina is going to close for a massive
renovation. In case the Villa is closed we are forced to remove this visit and drive from Agrigento
straight to Taormina.
Following breakfast, we drive through the interior of Sicily to reach Agrigento. We visit the finest of all ancient Greek sites - the Valley of the Temples. Later we will continue to Piazza Armerina. On arrival light-lunch at a country restaurant. This afternoon we view the ruins of the Roman Villa of Casale. The mosaics discovered here are celebrated amongst scholars of antiquity. Then continue to Taormina, the resort town of Sicily. Tonight dinner at a local restaurant (BB L D)
Day 5 Wednesday - Siracusa
Today we depart for Siracusa. On arrival stroll through the streets of Ortigia Island, the heart of the city centre. Light lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoons visit is through the Archaeological Park and the highlights are the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Paradise Quarry. Later back to Taormina. (BB L)
Day 6 Thursday - Taormina
All day at leisure to rest, shop or take an optional excursion (the Tour Escort will provide several optional excursions on the spot). (BB)
Day 7 Friday - Taormina/Catania
Time to say goodbye to Sicily. Independent transfer to Catania airport. (BB)
